Media Notes: The Case of the Golden Idol
I recently played The Case of the Golden Idol on my Mac via Steam, and it was an absolute blast. I love playing detective games, and I love point-and-click adventures, and I love playing pixel games, so I was pretty primed to really enjoy this.
And yet, I was surprised by how fun it was to piece bits of information together over the arc of the game. The little locked rooms that call back to each other are a nice touch, even if sometimes a little difficult. I think it walks the line between offering clues and demanding the player to recall past events fairly well outside of those small issues here and there.
I also tremendously enjoyed the music, and the art style is pretty witty. Peter Battley is my absolute favourite across all characters, an utter goofball. A lot of the characters actually have more personality than one might expect from a short, puzzle-heavy game like this one.
Next one on my list: The Séance of Blake Manor!
